Couples Counselling in Currumbin

A calm, supportive space to understand each, communicate differently and reconnect.

Relationships can be one of the most meaningful parts of our lives — and sometimes one of the most challenging.

You may feel like you're having the same arguments over and over. Communication may have broken down, resentment may be building, or perhaps you've simply started to feel more like housemates than partners.

Couples counselling provides a neutral, supportive space where both of you can slow things down, feel heard and begin to understand what's really happening within your relationship.

I offer in-person couples counselling from my private practice in Currumbin on the Gold Coast. I'm also available online.

When relationships become stuck

Most relationships go through difficult periods.

Sometimes the problem is obvious — a major life event, betrayal, separation, parenting pressures or a significant change.

Other times, the distance happens gradually.

Small misunderstandings become recurring arguments. Conversations become defensive.

Affection changes. You stop feeling heard or understood. Eventually, it can become difficult to remember how you ended up here.

Couples counselling creates space to step outside those patterns and look at what is happening between you rather than who is to blame.

The aim isn't to decide who is right or wrong.

It's to help you understand each other more deeply and find a healthier way forward.

What can couples counselling help with?

Every relationship is different, and couples come to counselling for many different reasons.

I commonly support couples experiencing:

  • Communication difficulties

  • Recurring arguments and conflict

  • Emotional disconnection

  • Feeling unheard or misunderstood

  • Loss of intimacy or affection

  • Resentment

  • Trust difficulties

  • Infidelity or betrayal

  • Parenting differences

  • Different needs or expectations within the relationship

  • Stress from work, family or finances

  • Major life transitions

  • Separation or uncertainty about the future

  • Rebuilding connection after a difficult period

You don't need to wait until your relationship is at breaking point before seeking support.

Couples counselling can also be a space to strengthen a relationship that is already working, understand each other better and develop healthier ways of communicating before problems become entrenched.

What is couples counselling with me like?

My approach is warm, compassionate and balanced.

My role isn't to take sides, decide who is right or tell you whether you should stay together.

Instead, I create a space where both people have an opportunity to speak openly and feel heard.

We look beyond the argument itself and begin exploring what is happening underneath it.

Often the thing you're arguing about isn't really the whole issue.

Underneath anger there may be hurt. Underneath criticism there may be a need to feel valued.

Underneath withdrawal there may be fear of conflict or rejection.

Understanding these deeper patterns can help change the way you respond to one another.

Together, we work towards greater understanding, healthier communication and a stronger emotional connection.

Breaking the cycle

Many couples find themselves caught in a repeating cycle.

One person may pursue a conversation while the other withdraws. One may become critical while the other becomes defensive. The more one reacts, the more the other reacts in return.

Before long, you're no longer responding to the original problem — you're responding to each other's reactions.

Counselling can help you recognise these patterns as they happen.

Rather than seeing your partner as the problem, we begin looking at the cycle the two of you have become caught in.

Once you can recognise the pattern, it becomes much easier to respond differently.

Communication and emotional connection

Good communication isn't simply about learning the right words to say.

It's also about feeling safe enough to say what you really mean — and being able to hear what your partner is trying to communicate without immediately becoming defensive or shutting down.

In counselling, we can work on:

  • Expressing needs more clearly

  • Listening without immediately reacting

  • Understanding triggers

  • Managing conflict differently

  • Recognising each other's emotional needs

  • Repairing after arguments

  • Rebuilding trust

  • Increasing affection and intimacy

  • Creating more meaningful connection

The goal isn't to eliminate disagreement.

Healthy couples still disagree.

The difference is learning how to move through disagreement without losing connection with each other.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

For couples wanting a more structured approach, I also offer Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

The Gottman Method is based on decades of research into relationships and focuses on helping couples strengthen friendship and connection, manage conflict more effectively and build a healthier relationship together.

It can be particularly helpful for couples experiencing recurring conflict, communication difficulties, emotional distance or wanting to strengthen their relationship.

Because Gottman therapy follows a more structured process, a minimum of six sessions is required when choosing this approach.

You don't have to undertake Gottman therapy to attend couples counselling with me. We can also work together in a more flexible counselling format depending on what feels right for you both.

Your first couples counselling session

The first appointment gives us an opportunity to understand what's been happening within your relationship and what has brought you to counselling.

Both partners will have space to share their perspective.

We may talk about:

  • What is currently happening in your relationship

  • When things began to change

  • The patterns you've noticed between you

  • What each of you would like to be different

  • What you value about your relationship

  • What you hope to gain from counselling

You don't need to arrive agreeing about what the problem is.

In fact, it's very common for partners to see the relationship quite differently.

That's okay.

We start with where you both are now and work from there.

Do we have to be in crisis?

No.

Some couples come to counselling because their relationship is in significant difficulty.

Others come because they've noticed themselves drifting apart and want to reconnect before that distance grows.

And some simply want to understand each other better.

Seeking counselling doesn't mean your relationship has failed.

Sometimes it means you're willing to give the relationship the time and attention it deserves.
